Whether you know it or not, communities exist around your product/service. Engaging them and providing a positive user experience is increasingly a competitive advantage. The question is: how can you design for it?

In this workshop, Joshua Porter will share best practices of designing for community, including the topics:

How to decide what social networking features to have, and not have.
Setting the tone with copywriting and design elements.
Writing rules and regulations in plain language.
What a Community Manager does and what they’re responsible for.
How to let the community police itself.
How to say you’re sorry when something bad happens.
The 10 habits of highly effective community managers.

In this talk Porter will cover the bases of designing for community. You’ll be armed with a valuable set of practices to implement with your own communities.

where can i get the slides that Josh used yesterday?

I was wondering the same thing.

Great session. Content was good. I would have liked to see a few more specifics on standards or elements of design.

this was way to high level and unstructured - it didn't seem like Joshua had really prepared which is frustrating given the cost and time invested by the participants. Maybe my expectations were tainted by the exceptionally organized and presented conversation by Dion that I went to in the morning which had lots of depth and detail of substance.

Josh did a great job with his presentation. He had a big challenge with a 3 hour block of time, making the session feel a little drawn out - a break to interact with a design activity would have made it "perfect." However, having read his book in advance of the session, I can honestly say that it added great value to my experience. Back to the "interaction" - another reason that would have been valuable is that the room was full of like-minded talented people and I wish I could have connected more with them.

This session gave us a solid foundation from which to approach community building. Not only did Josh provide a detailed outline in terms of design, he also offered us some insights on what the Community Manager's job description should look like. This was very helpful for someone interested in cultivating or hiring an inhouse CM for our company.

Good presentation with well organized format.

Good session, but as I'd already read Josh's book, not a whole lot of new material here. Was nice to see him speak in person, but I probably could have attended something else instead. :)

I thought that the session was very interesting and engaging, and we got a lot of great ideas for our community from it. It was worth every cent... and that is something I have never said before about a conference session. Much better than the morning session, and his willingness to answer specific and individual questions was great.

Anyone have the PPT from this?

I thought this a pretty insightful presentation. I bought the book :)

Tons of useful anecdotes and tactical solutions - thanks!

really strong session. packed full of insights and advice that got me thinking.
