Designing for the Internet(s) of the Future
Track: Design & UX
Tags Design & UX
In less than forty years, the internet has moved from the margins of everyday life into a range of mainstreams: internet connectivity can be found on personal computers and laptops, in cell phones and other mobile devices, in satellite navigation systems, connected consumer electronics, gaming consoles and even personal health technologies. Similarly the internet touches and is touched by people all over the globe. It is an evolving sociotechnical system, rather than simply a technology. In this session, we will focus on many different pathways and trajectories along which the internet is evolving and transforming.

Thanks Genevieve for a presentation packed with real insights - massively interesting stuff to sift through. More of this type of presentation Web2.0 people.
I was hoping for more "big picture" presentations at this conference like this instead of "how to" talks. This was informative & inspiring and it's amazing that Intel is funding work which looks into how technology is being adapted in different parts of the world. We have such a U.S- and English-centric view of the Internet and we need more talks like this that bring in a more global understanding of technology.
I'd love it if there was an entire conference just devoted to social aspects of the globalization of technology...there are so many technology conferences, there must be one put on somewhere!
Really informative and gave me tons to think about. My notes on the talk are posted here: http://whitneyhess.com/blog/2008/09/web-20-expo-ny-genevieve-bells-designing-for-the-internets-of-the-future/
As the Expo receeds in my memory, this was the best presentation by far, because it made us think beyond ourselves and our community. My summary of the session is here:

Opened my eyes to see that My Internet was not the same as everyone elses Internet. It was interesting to see how the web takes shape in different places, as well as the impact of the culture. A new perspective: We want everything NOW, but not everyone needs everything NOW.
Very interesting. Thought provoking. We are somewhat in our own ivory tower and have to avoid our own culture blinders to the true world, and opportunity.
Also, an interesting, fun and engaging discussion.
Ms. Bell took one of the riskiest topics of the Expo and drove it home with expertise and meaning. One of the best presenters at any conference.

Brilliant! Thx for global perspective.
